Guest Lecture by Spanish Ambassador-at-Large Ms. Alonso: The UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda and Spanish Feminist Foreign Policy

Unnamed

Room 2.07

The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) global agenda, launched in 2000 through UNSC Resolution 1325, reframed security by recognizing women as key actors in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict governance. Feminist foreign policy, pursued by an increasing number of states, applies this agenda by embedding gender equality into diplomacy, development cooperation, and multilateral action. Spain is one of the leaders in this approach, prioritizing human rights, eliminating gender-based violence, and promoting women’s participation in decision-making.

Within the framework of the IRD course Gender Equality and Politics, we have the privilege to meet with Ms. Ana María Alonso GigantoAmbassador-at-Large for Feminist Foreign Policy at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of the Alliance of Feminist Foreign Policy Ambassadors. Her diplomatic experience includes postings in Afghanistan, Egypt, Thailand, Australia, and the Mission of Spain to the United Nations. The session will introduce the key elements of the WPS agenda and feminist foreign policy, examine their practical implementation, identify effective mechanisms, and assess opportunities for shared learning and cooperation
